Gardening Pansies

Growing pansies could be very successfully during fall and winter seasons. Experts recommend, when gardening pansies, to sow seed indoors in mid-summer, six to eight weeks before transplanting. The pansies can be transplanted into the garden once the summer heat has been broken and cooler weather arrives.

Pansies are very popular and also a recognizable cool weather annuals. Breeding has produced pansies that are better able to stand up to the cold, but there hasn't been much luck producing more heat tolerant varieties. Many pansies flowers are bicolored, making them striking plants for their small size. Although delicate, pansy plants are surprisingly hardy.

Pansy are grown from seeds. They like full to partial sun. When gardening pansies, they can be directly seeded into your flower garden or seeded indoors for transplanting later. For spring blooms, you need to start your pansies in pots and containers indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost.

To transplant pansies into your garden after the last frost date for your area, you need to space them 6" apart. They will tolerate a little crowding. If you are creating a flower bed, you may want to create a pattern or color scheme prior to planting. Or, use mixed varieties. The Gardener's Network

According to Maria Lanotti in About, spring through early summer is the blooming period of pansy flowers, with some repeat bloom in the fall. USDA Zones 7 and above can grow pansies throughout the winter and there are newer varieties, like the ice pansy, bred to withstand light snow.

She also suggest us, if we are going to buy pansy plants, to choose pansies that are stocky, bushy and have plenty of buds. Avoid plants full of open blooms, because they will be stressed to near exhaustion from working so hard in a tiny pot.
