Violas and pansies are irresistable with their cheeky little faces. They appear in the toughest places and can flower at all times of the year.

Pansies are one of the earliest flowering plants, blooming right alongside your spring bulbs. These members of the violet family herald in the new garden season with a wide variety of bright, brilliant colors. They include almost all colors of the rainbow including black, and many bi-colors. Although pansies are not fussy plants, they will grow best in a loose, rich soil with a slightly acid pH (6.0 - 6.2). They flower best in full sun and will get spindly in deep shade. Pansies do not like heat at all and will begin to decline as the days warm up. Regular watering will help them hang on a bit longer, but don't expect your pansies to last all season. Pansy blooms are single with five petals that are rounded in shape. Pansy flowers have one of three basic color patterns. Blooms can be single, clear color, such as yellow or blue. A second pattern is a single color having black lines radiating from its center. These lines are called penciling and are similar to viola markings. The last type of flower is probably the one most familiar to home gardeners. The bloom of this type has a dark center called a "face". Plant Answers

To take great pansy pictures you need to know about the growing and blooming period of pansy plants. The bloom period is spring through early summer, with some repeat bloom in the fall. Since they are very short-lived as perennials and tend to deteriorate after their first year of bloom, pansies are grown as annuals or biennials. However, they can self-seed.
